Horror Movie Weapon Cast, Release Date, Plot, Trailer & More

What would you do if 17 kids from a single classroom vanished into thin air at exactly 2:17 a.m.? Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian's upcoming horror flick Weapons, has that unsettling premise.

If you're still haunted by the twists and turns of Barbarian, get ready — Weapons is being called its “spiritual successor,” and it promises to be even darker, deeper, and more twisted.

But wait — the missing kids are just the beginning. Midway through, the movie takes a dramatic turn and delves into uncharted terrain with a framework reminiscent of Magnolia that connects several stories.

So if you're looking for your next big horror obsession, Weapons might just be the one. Let’s break down everything we know — from cast and trailer to the chilling plot.

Weapon Trailer

In a chilling twist, a new movie trailer reveals a normal school day gone horribly wrong. A young narrator explains how one Wednesday, Mrs. Gandy’s classroom was mysteriously empty while every other class was full.

At 2:17 a.m., 17 children ran into the darkness and never returned. Julia Garner plays Mrs. Gandy, with Benedict Wong as the school principal who warns her to stay away. Josh Brolin appears as a worried father, suspicious about why only her class was affected.

The trailer shows eerie moments, from creepy classrooms to sudden car crashes and haunting screams—hinting at a thrilling mystery ahead.

Story Of Horror Film Weapon

Every child in a class at an elementary school in the imaginary town of Maybrook vanishes on the same night at the exact time, except for one. Weapons’s logline suggests that the community is “left wondering who or what is responsible for their disappearance.” Cregger shared that the narrative goes beyond just the absent children.

“The film will diverge and transform and innovate and explore new paths.” It certainly doesn't neglect that question, trust me, but that's only part of the film. By the halfway point, we’ve progressed to much wilder things than that.

World of Reel stated that the movie includes several interconnected narratives and has a structure similar to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia. The promotional website, maybrookmissing.net, features an article on Tess from Cregger's Barbarian, implying that Weapons occur within the same universe, although it's uncertain if this will influence the storyline.

Is Weapon Based On True Events?

No – it is not derived from a true story, although Cregger has drawn from actual events for inspiration. During a recent interview, Cregger spoke about this candidly. Though the movie isn't about a particular event, he disclosed that it drew inspiration from genuine suffering.

After his breakout horror debut with Barbarian in 2022, Zach Cregger is back to direct Weapons — a multifaceted and ambitious ‘spiritual successor’ that's already creating excitement before its launch.

Known for his ability to defy expectations, Cregger has produced another horror film that appears to defy accepted genre conventions. Weapons goes beyond Barbarian's use of structural twists to heighten tension with its "Magnolia-inspired horror epic."

Weapons hits cinemas and IMAX on August 8, 2025 — and trust us, this isn’t just another horror movie. It’s a twisted mystery you won’t forget.
