House of the Dragon ends with season four; production of season three starts next year

The dragons of Westeros will soar for the last time after season four. HBO's acclaimed prequel series House of the Dragon will conclude with its fourth season, as confirmed by Ryan Condal, the showrunner and co-creator. This revelation was made while Condal was discussing the finale of the show’s second season, which aired on August 4, 2024.

House of the Dragon, a prequel set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, debuted its second season in June. Condal shared that the third season is currently in the writing phase and is scheduled to start filming in early 2025. While it is not yet confirmed whether the third season will mirror the second season’s format of eight episodes, Condal indicated that the show’s dramatic cadence is likely to remain consistent with the previous season.

Season two of House of the Dragon picks up the story shortly after the death of King Viserys I, focusing on the ensuing conflict between his daughter Rhaenyra, portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, and his wife Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke. Both women are embroiled in a bitter struggle for the Iron Throne, a central conflict in the series. The show, based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, delves into the tumultuous Dance of the Dragons, a significant and destructive chapter in Westeros history that severely impacted the Targaryen Empire.

The decision to end House of the Dragon after four seasons aligns with Martin’s previous statements on his blog. He had suggested that the series would require “four seasons of 10 episodes each” to fully explore the Dance of the Dragons narrative. This structured approach aims to provide a comprehensive portrayal of the historical events that shaped the world of Westeros.

In addition to House of the Dragon, HBO is developing another prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this new series is based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, promising to further expand the rich tapestry of the Game of Thrones universe.
