Seventeen years, countless rumours, and one very persistent fanbase later, Rajkumar Hirani has finally said the words everyone's been waiting for.
The 3 Idiots sequel is happening, or at least, it's being written, and the original cast is coming back for it.
If Rancho, Farhan and Raju's college chaos shaped your growing-up years the way it did for millions of Indians, here's everything Hirani has revealed so far.
3 Idiots Sequel Confirmed By Rajkumar Hirani
Speaking to ANI, Hirani gave the clearest update yet on a sequel that's been the subject of speculation for years. "Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai, we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it. Abhi toh we are still writing," he said, before adding the line fans have been desperate to hear, "Casting will be the same."
That confirms Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi will reprise Rancho, Farhan and Raju, with Kareena Kapoor Khan also expected back as Pia. Hirani was careful to stress, though, that nothing is fully locked in yet, the film will only move forward once the script reaches a point that genuinely satisfies him and his writing team. It's a familiar approach for the filmmaker, who's previously said he'd rather not make a sequel at all than make one that doesn't measure up to the original.
What Is The Story Of The 3 Idiots Sequel?
Here's the part that's got fans most curious. According to Rajkumar Hirani, the sequel isn't going to revisit the trio's college years at all. "It's not about the students; it's about 20 years later, ab kya hota hai unki life main," he explained, meaning the film will catch up with Rancho, Farhan and Raju as adults, well past the world of ragging, engineering exams and Virus's tyranny.
Interestingly, Hirani revealed the story wasn't even originally written as a 3 Idiots sequel. He and co-writer Abhijat Joshi were developing a completely different script when they realised it could work as a continuation of these characters' lives instead. "We were writing another story, and then it felt like the story we had written would fit into this second part," he said.
It's a similar journey to how Lage Raho Munna Bhai came together, a sequel that also wasn't originally planned as one. Some reports have also suggested the film could be set around 15 years after the emotional Ladakh reunion that closed out the original, where Pia finally got her moment with Rancho and his real identity as Phunsukh Wangdu was revealed.

Whether other beloved faces like Boman Irani's Virus, Omi Vaidya's Chatur, Mona Singh, or Jaaved Jaaferi's real Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad will also return remains unconfirmed for now. Hirani has only spoken about the four principal cast members so far.
Why 3 Idiots Still Matters, Nearly Two Decades Later
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots wasn't just a hit, it became a cultural reset button for how Indian cinema talked about education, mental health and the pressure to conform.
Adapted loosely from Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone, the film went on to become the highest-grossing Indian movie of its time, and its dialogues, from "All Izz Well" to "Aal Izz Well" jokes, are still part of everyday conversation nearly two decades later. That kind of staying power is exactly why any hint of a sequel instantly becomes national news.
Clearing Up The 3 Idiots Re-Release Confusion
Adding to the buzz, reports had recently claimed that the original 3 Idiots would re-release in theatres on September 4. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra shut that down directly, calling the reports "false and factually incorrect" in an official statement, and urging fans and media to rely only on announcements from verified channels.
The rumours had gained traction around the same time the film was pulled into an unrelated conversation involving activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose work is often cited as a partial inspiration for Aamir Khan's character. Aamir has previously clarified that Rancho was based on the novel, not any one real person.
With Rajkumar Hirani confirming the original cast and revealing the story is set two decades after college, the 3 Idiots sequel finally feels real, even if fans will have to wait a little longer for an official release date.
