The Daayra trailer dropped today, and it wastes no time throwing two of its finest actors into a debate that doesn't have an easy answer. If you like your thrillers morally messy rather than black and white, this one's going to stay with you.

Directed by National Award-winner Meghna Gulzar, the Daayra trailer went live on August 31, 2026, and it immediately sets up a tense, layered face-off. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, a police officer who believes firmly in working strictly within the framework of the law.
Prithviraj Sukumaran plays DCP Raman Kumar, whose idea of justice takes him into far murkier territory, specifically, a controversial police encounter that Ajooni is determined to investigate.
The trailer builds its tension around a missing girl, a juvenile crime angle, and the encounter that follows, with Raman defending the action and Ajooni questioning whether it was ever truly justified.
Interestingly, Meghna Gulzar has gone on record clarifying that Daayra isn't a direct retelling of the 2019 Hyderabad case that many fans initially assumed it was based on.
Instead, she's described it as drawing from several real incidents across the country, using them to build a larger, more universal argument about where the line between law and justice actually sits.

At its core, Daayra is a crime thriller that's less interested in the crime itself and more interested in what happens after, how public opinion forms, how quickly people take sides, and how two officers within the same system can walk away with completely different understandings of what justice actually means. The film's official synopsis describes it as following "DCP Raman Kumar and DCP Ajooni Kohli as a case places them on opposing sides of the same system," pushing both officers, and the audience, to confront uncomfortable questions about truth and accountability.
This marks Meghna Gulzar's return to the kind of socially conscious, grey-area storytelling she's known for in films like Talvar and Raazi, and it's also the first time Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran have shared screen space. Notably, this is Kareena's first film in two years, following her last appearance in Singham Again, and her first collaboration with Gulzar.

Add to that Kunal Kemmu's Hindi action-comedy VIBE, featuring Preity Zinta and Sparsh Shrivastava, and the Punjabi action drama Mitti De Putt, starring Dev Kharoud, and you've got four different film industries all competing for audience attention on the very same Friday.
For Daayra, that means going up against a genre mix ranging from comedy to horror to mass-action, across different languages.
