Vijay Varma, the famous actor, shared exciting news about a new web series called "Matka King" on Instagram. This series, directed by Nagraj Manjule, is about gambling and is currently being filmed. But did you know about a real-life person who was known as the "Matka King" in India many years ago?
His name was Ratan Khatri, and he was a big name in the world of gambling from the 1960s to the 1990s. Ratan came from a family that moved to India from Pakistan during the partition in 1947. He became famous for changing the way people played the game of "matka," a type of gambling that started in Mumbai.
At first, Ratan worked with another famous gambler named Kalyanji Bhagat. Later, he started his own gambling business called "Ratan Matka." He made the game more interesting by using different methods to choose random numbers, like picking playing cards. Many people, including celebrities, played his game.
But Ratan faced some trouble during a time called the Emergency in India, and he had to go to jail for about 19 months. After that, he continued his gambling business until he retired in the early 1990s. He passed away in 2020, but people still remember him as the Matka King.
The web series "Matka King" tells a fictional story set in Mumbai in the 1960s. It's about a man who wants to be respected and starts a new gambling game called "Matka." Matka King will also feature Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover and Siddharth Jadhav in pivotal roles. It’s produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Manjule, along with Gargi Kulkarni, Ashish Aryan, and Ashwini Sidwani, under the banner of Roy Kapur Films.

Matka King is penned by Nagraj and Abhay Koranne. Vijay shared a poster showing him in a retro look and throwing playing cards at the camera. He wrote, “Ready to place our bet! #MatkaKingOnPrime soon but filming now.” The press note also states that the “game takes the city by storm, democratising a terrain previously reserved for the rich and elite.”
There's also another movie in Telugu called "Matka," directed by Karuna Kumar. Even though it's not about Ratan Khatri, it's inspired by real events in India. This movie will star Varun Tej and will show different time periods from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Both the web series and the movie explore the world of gambling in India, showing how people take risks to win big. They tell stories of ambition, power, and the excitement of trying to make a fortune in a risky world.
