Dhruv Rathee Deletes Video After Backlash Over AI Sikh Guru Visuals

YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who is well-known for his daring opinions and informative videos, was recently in trouble. His most recent animated film, which was intended to honor the valor of Sikh warriors, took an unexpected and unfavorable turn.

According to reports, the images featured AI generated visuals of Sikh Gurus, which is completely prohibited in Sikhism.

Political figures and others, all voiced their concerns, describing the film as a grave transgression of Sikh principles and rehat maryada. Dhruv was forced to remove the video and apologize publicly due to the rapid explosion of the scandal.

What exactly happened, then? What caused such harm to the community? What implications does this have for AI-era digital creators? Let's dissect everything.

About Video

The video, which used animation to highlight the courage of Sikh warriors, was criticized for depicting Sikh gurus as human beings, which is considered extremely offensive in Sikhism. Sikh gurus and their families shouldn't be shown graphically in films or animations, according to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who called the portrayal a "breach of Sikh values and customs." He cautioned of possible legal measures if the video stayed on the internet.

SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed similar worries, emphasizing that these representations contradict the rehat maryada (Sikh code of conduct) and have profoundly offended the community’s feelings.

In response to the controversy, Dhruv Rathee posted a statement on IG saying that while the video received negative feedback, he decided to remove it due to religious feelings. Certain viewers strongly believe that any animated representation of the Sikh Gurus contradicts their beliefs. "I do not wish for this to turn into a political or religious issue," he stated, explaining that his goal was to inform and pay tribute to Indian heroes using a contemporary method.

Fans Trolling

Even with Rathee’s clarification, the criticism persisted. Delhi cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa described the video as “disrespectful” and accused Rathee of misrepresenting Sikh history. In the meantime, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) lodged an official complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell. The DSGMC claimed that the video distorted the legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji, and breached fundamental Sikh religious tenets by employing AI-created visuals.

DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka expressed that due to Rathee’s extensive audience of more than 10 million subscribers, the dissemination of false information was a major worry. The committee advocated for swift measures against the content and a reassessment of the channel's material, encouraging responsible digital narratives that honor religious feelings

This controversy is a reminder that intentions alone aren’t enough — when it comes to faith and history, creators must tread carefully. Respect always comes first.
