From Heroes to Legends: Ranking the 11 Greatest Hollywood Action Movies

  1. Dirty Harry (1971)

There is no way I can compile a list of the top Hollywood action Movies without mentioning even one Don Siegel-helmed Clint Eastwood movie.

The first installment in the Dirty Harry series is the 1971 criminal thriller Dirty Harry. In the movie, Clint Eastwood portrays the title character, an inspector with the SFPD.

The plot of the movie is on Dirty Harry's investigation and a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer by the name of Scorpio.

2. GoldFinger (1964)

In the iconic James Bond movie "Goldfinger," Sean Connery plays Agent 007. The third entry in the James Bond series was helmed by Guy Hamilton.

The same-named novel by Ian Fleming served as the inspiration for the 1964 spy thriller movie. Auric Goldfinger's attempts to contaminate the US Bullion Depository at Fort Knox are revealed in "Goldfinger," which is based on an investigation led by James Bond.

The first Bond series blockbuster, this 1964 picture also served as Bond's debut in Hollywood action movies.

3. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

No action is better than what you see in a Hollywood action adventure movie. The first film in the Indiana Jones series, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Harrison Ford plays Indiana Jones in the movie, an archaeologist who battles Nazis while trying to find the Ark of the Covenant, which Hitler wants to make his army unstoppable.

Three additional films in the Indiana Jones franchise have been produced as a result of the character of Indiana Jones and the movie's theme's immediate appeal to fans of Hollywood action movies.

4. Commando(1985)

The main character of the Hollywood action movies is a retired US Special Forces Colonel and parent who has 11 hours to save his daughter from a gang of mercenaries.

In the movie, Vernon Wells plays the major antagonist, while Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the father and a retired colonel in this thrilling tale of action and suspense.

5. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

The second Hollywood action movies to feature a young John Connor is titled Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The James Cameron-directed movie follows Sarah Connor and her 10-year-old son John Connor 10 years after the events of the last movie.

A more evolved Terminator T-1000 is sent back in time to assassinate John Connor since he will eventually become the head of the human resistance.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's less technologically advanced Terminator is dispatched to defend John Connor in order to fend off this assault. The movie is about the titanic conflict between the two machines.

6. Predator (1987)

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the commander of an elite Special Forces squad assigned to rescue hostages from the guerrilla-held zone in the Hollywood action movies Predator, directed by John McTiernan.

They were unaware that they were facing up against a technologically advanced type of extraterrestrial life rather than a human soldier. The main question in the story is whether they will pursue the predator or be pursued.

7. The Terminator(1984)

The first film in the Hollywood action movies Terminator series is The Terminator. The James Cameron-directed movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the movie's antagonist, who is sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor in order to prevent her from giving birth to John Connor.

In a post-apocalyptic future, her son is the only hope for humanity and the head of the human resistance to machines.

8. Aliens(1986)

Hollywood action movies Aliens, a sequel to the Alien film series, was directed by James Cameron. The events and the first meeting with the alien in the previous movie are continued in the 1986 movie Aliens.

In the movie, Ellen Ripley visits the exomoon LV-426 from which she only barely escaped in the first one. To save everyone from the alien onslaught once more, she must overcome her deepest fears.

In 1992, Sigourney Weaver returned to the character of Ellen Ripley in the film's sequel and third entry in the Alien series.

9. Face Off(1997)

A fascinating Hollywood action movies starring Nicholas Cage and John Travolta is called Face/Off.

The film, which was directed by John Woo, provides a compelling story about the conflict between an FBI agent and a terrorist.

The face transplant method that enables the FBI agent to first imitate the terrorist and later the terrorist to impersonate the FBI agent is what makes the movie interesting.

10. The Rock(1996)

Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage play the main characters in the 1996 Hollywood action movies The Rock.

The Michael Bay-directed movie chronicles a rescue effort to free the prisoners and San Francisco from renegade US Force Recon Marines who have taken control of Alcatraz Island, commanded by an FBI chemist and a former SAS captain.

The film's main conflict is whether or not they are successful in their rescue attempt.

11. Speed(1994)

The principal actors in the 1994 Hollywood action movies Speed are Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The film's whole plot revolves around speed, so the title is completely warranted.

An LAPD officer boards the moving bus to save a passenger after a bomber sets up a city bus with a bomb that will detonate if the speed of the vehicle drops below 50 mph.

The main conflict of the remaining scenes centers on whether he saves everyone or becomes the bomber's next victim.
