Akshay Kumar's Bellbottom Postponed Again, Will Be Released In Cinemas In August

On June 15, commerce, industry and fans were suddenly shocked when bollywood actor Akshay Kumar announced that his much-anticipated film, BellBottom, would be released in cinemas on July 27. This was the time when Covid-19 news was such that cases were steadily declining and Maharashtra put in place a level-based unlocking plan. Therefore, everyone was expecting cinemas to open almost everywhere in India, including major hubs like Mumbai in Maharashtra and the capital, Delhi.

Unfortunately, a few days later, news arrived of the deadly Delta Plus variant that wreaked havoc. This new alternative is said to be more transferable and could lead to a third wave at any time. As a result, the Maharashtra government removed Tier 1 and Tier 2 from its unlock plan and established Tier 3 as the base level. Cinemas were only allowed to open in cities and regions under level 1 and 2. With cases in Maharashtra along with that of Kerala contributing nearly 50% of cases across India, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray wants a conservative approach to opening the state.

A source tells us: “Uddhav Thackeray will sit down with his staff and other officials to determine the next course of action. The positivity rate is less than 2% in Mumbai for most days in the last two weeks. So, some relaxation is expected starting from 15 July. But it remains to be seen what If theaters will be allowed to open. In a city like Delhi there are less than 100 cases per day for more than 10 days, and there the government can allow cinemas to open. But no one knows exactly what the Maharashtra government will finish with regarding cinemas."

The source continues, “Maharashtra, particularly its hubs like Mumbai and Pune metropolitan area, is critical as it contributes a large portion of the revenue. Launching Bellbottom without Maharashtra is out of the question.” The source also adds: “Even if theaters are granted a restart on July 15th. In Maharashtra, it would be difficult for a movie crew to get a single promotional window of 12 days. Too short for a great movie like Bellbottom. So it makes sense to put the movie back a few weeks."

A trade expert says, "The filmmakers might consider releasing the film on August 13, the Independence Day weekend. It will also benefit manufacturers, as there are smaller working days (Parsi New Year on Monday, August 16 and Muharram on Thursday, August 19)." There were also talks to come out a week later, on August 20, two days before the Raksha Bandhan festival. A clearer picture should emerge in a few days from now."

In addition to Akshay Kumar, Bilbottom also stars Vani Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Lara Dutta, and Adil Hussain. Directed by Ranjit M Tiwari, it was one of the first Bollywood films to be shot amid the coronavirus pandemic.
