India is a country which consists of three professional armed forces, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy. The Indian Armed Forces are supported by paramilitary organizations and Indian Coast guard.The Supreme Commander of Indian Armed forces is the president of the country. India has the world’s second largest military power being the most massive volunteer army in the world. 

The Indian Armed Forces have been involved in several military operations like the 1947 Indo-Pak war, 1965 Portuguese Indian War, 1971 Sino Indian War and 1967 Chola Incident. The Kargil War against Pakistan was a major military operation. From the year 1962, India has been maintaining close military relations with Russia.

The India Military Strength 2019 is around 1,362,500 in number, and there are total 2082 aircraft in India. The fighter planes are 520 while the attacking jets are 694. The full helicopters in Indian Military are 692 with attacking helicopters being 17. India owns 4184 combat tanks with 2815 armored fight vehicles. There are more than 265 rocket projectors in India under the control of Military forces.

Military Budget of India 

In the year 2018, the military budget of India was around 2.1% of GDP, which supported the 1.4 million troops. About $58 billion amount was allocated last year for the armed forces. According to the 2019-2020 budget, Modi’s administration hasn’t done much for the public sector, but the defense budget will be around Rs. 3,00,000 crores and it is the highest budget in a particular year. It is excellent news for the Indian armed forces, but it is still less to satisfy all the requirements of the Indian Military. Most of the budget is spent in maintenance of the current troops and increasing its number. 

Nuclear Weapons and Missiles 

India owns the capability of delivering nuclear missiles as there are total nine operational missiles in the country among which Agni-3 has the range of 3000 km to 5000km. 

Indian Army

There is a total of 1.2 million active soldiers who are protecting Indian borders with 3565 battle tanks, 336 armored personnel carriers, 3100 fighting vehicles, and 9719 artillery pieces as per the reports. The Indian Army is also a volunteer service, and there is no kind of military draft imposed on the country. Being one of the most massive volunteer armies, India depicts as a strong nation. The Indian Army has rich experience of combating  against terrains because of varied geography in the country. The Army of India also provides internal security to the country. 

The present combat doctrine in Indian Army is based on utilizing strike formations and holding formations. If there will be an attack, then the holding formations will have the enemy, and strike formations would be ready to counter attack them. The army is large enough to devote the corps on the striking role. There are 18 infantry divisions, 4 RAPID, three armored divisions, 13 corps and number of independent brigades along with service support and units. 

Indian Navy 

The Indian Navy is the naval branch of India Military Strength. The Indian Navy has 16 submarines, one aircraft carrier, 106 coastal and patrol combatant vessels along with 75 combat aircraft. There are around 67,000 personnel working in Indian aviation and marine staff. The Indian Navy has one aircraft carrier named INS Vikramaditya, and it is modified Kiev-class of the ship. Navy has the responsibility of operating Rajput class and Delhi class guided missile destroyers. The Indian Navy has got a sizeable fleet of Shishumar and Sindhughosh class submarines. There is also nuclear power submarine INS Chakra for the attack which has been leased from the country, Russia. 

Indian Air Force 

The Indian Air Force is the air arm of the Indian Armed forces. IAF has 127,200 personnel with 814 combat aircraft, and according to the officials, Indians can have MiG-21 22 squadrons by the year 2032. The Air force plays a vital role in the power projection of India in the Indian Ocean and South Asia due to which expanding and modernizing Air Force is a major priority for the Indian government. The Indian Air force is progressing to become network-centric force due to the integration of the Air Force network, and it helps in enabling a faster and accurate response to the enemy threats. In the year 2013, IAF also launched $3 billion of a cellular system with which secured video calling and other details can be exchanged with full privacy. The forces also plan to provide 1000 mobile to the personnel of sergeant rank so that they can connect and deliver connectivity to airborne forces.
