Following the massive global success of the hit military drama Operation Safed Sagar - which climbed to the No. 2 spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English TV list - Netflix India dropped The Last Salute Teaser alongside its official release date.
This upcoming documentary film, officially titled The Last Salute: A Tribute to MiG-21, is scheduled for an exclusive global premiere on Netflix on August 26, 2026. Directed by Kushal Srivastava and produced by Matchbox Shots (with producer Sanjay Routray), the short clip offers an emotional, high-flying preview into the legacy of the supersonic jet, marking the very first time the aircraft was filmed right after its retirement.
What Is The Last Salute About?
While the series Operation Safed Sagar focused on fictionalized events and war efforts of the 1999 Kargil War, this upcoming documentary film turns the spotlight directly onto the machine itself: the iconic Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21.
Six Decades of Sky Glory: It explores the aircraft’s 62-year journey with the Indian Air Force (IAF), tracing its origin as a Soviet design to licensed production by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) starting in the 1960s.
Historic Missions Covered: Shot largely at Air Force Station Chandigarh (the base where the jet first landed in India), the documentary revisits key combat operations during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, its vital role in the 1999 Kargil conflict, and its recent action during the 2019 Balakot air strikes.
Human-Machine Bond: Beyond technical specs, the story highlights the deep bond between the aircraft and the generations of air warriors who flew and maintained it.

While discussing the project, Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, explained that during the making of Operation Safed Sagar, the crew kept hearing so many pilot stories about the MiG-21 that they felt its legacy needed its own story. Producer Sanjay Routray agreed, sharing that the jet wasn't just metal and machinery to the pilots, but an actual emotion, making this release a heartfelt tribute to Indian aviation history.
