Christopher Nolan's Interstellar returned to theaters once more to celebrate the film's 10-year anniversary. The interest in the sci-fi film is increasing, and Paramount and IMAX took advantage of this rising demand by increasing the domestic screen count to 320 this weekend. This enabled them to generate $3.5 million in the U.S. and $3.75 million globally.
The earnings after the re-release over 10 days currently totals $10.8 million, making it the highest-grossing re-release ever.
The movie's re-release has raised its total global earnings to Rs $132.3 million, positioning it as the 8th highest-grossing IMAX film of all time.
The intense popularity of the film caused ticket prices to soar to $215 in the resale market, leading fans to scramble for a spot.
The film's first showing occurred on 166 screens nationwide, but because of strong demand, producers needed to increase the number of screenings. IMAX's 70mm showing was completely booked within minutes.
Will Interstellar be re-released in India?
Despite significant global demand, Interstellar missed its re-release in IMAX in India because all IMAX screens were occupied by the Allu Arjun film Pushpa 2 in December.
Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna's film achieved an incredible performance nationwide, earning more than Rs 1414 crore globally within only 12 days of its launch.
Interstellar Faces Stiff Competition From Pushpa 2 For IMAX Theaters In India
Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule is set to be released nationwide on December 5 in both 2D and IMAX formats. The re-release of Interstellar coincides with the pan-India blockbuster. As a result, the science fiction drama will not be making a comeback to IMAX in India.
Interstellar earned approximately $730 million worldwide. It received five nominations at the 87th Academy Awards, securing the award for Best Visual Effects. The movie revolves around a farmer and former NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, who is assigned to command a spacecraft alongside a group of researchers to discover a new planet for humanity as Earth becomes unlivable in the future.
In conclusion, while Interstellar's IMAX re-release has taken the US by storm, it’s clear that Bollywood’s Pushpa 2 has taken over the IMAX scene in India. Fans will have to wait a little longer for Nolan's space adventure to make its mark here.
