What Is Verity About?
Based on Colleen Hoover's 2018 self-published novel of the same name, Verity (Psychological Drama) follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer facing financial ruin, played by Dakota Johnson. She's offered a life-changing job: complete the remaining books in a hugely successful thriller series written by celebrated author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway, after a devastating car accident leaves Verity unable to finish them herself.
The job seems straightforward enough until Lowen moves into the Crawford household and stumbles upon an unfinished manuscript filled with unsettling, deeply personal notes. As she digs deeper, chilling secrets about Verity and her family's past start surfacing, and Lowen is forced to question whether she's ghostwriting for a brilliant, misunderstood author or something far more dangerous. Complicating things further is her growing closeness with Verity's husband, Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett, blurring the already thin line between fiction and reality.
Described by its own marketing as a "gothic, psychosexual thriller" in the vein of Rebecca and Gone Girl, Verity leans fully into slow-burning dread, secrets, and morally messy relationships rather than jump scares or conventional horror.

A Long Road to the Screen
Verity's journey to the big screen wasn't a quick one. The script went through several writers over the years, including Hoover herself alongside Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and the duo of Will Honley and April Maguire, before Nick Antosca ultimately wrote the final version that made it to production.
Michael Showalter directs the film, reuniting with Anne Hathaway after their previous collaboration on the romantic drama The Idea of You. Hathaway, Hoover, and Showalter all serve as producers through their respective production banners, Somewhere Pictures, Heartbones Entertainment, and Semi-Formal Productions, with Dakota Johnson also on board as an executive producer.
The film was originally set for a wide theatrical release on May 15, 2026, but has since been pushed to October 2, 2026, positioning it as a key release during the fall movie season instead.

With Verity's steamy, secret-laced premise and a release timed just ahead of Halloween, trade analysts believe it has all the right ingredients to become one of the true sleeper hits of the fall season.
