Early life

Mrunal Thakur was born on August 1, 1992, in Dhule, Maharashtra, to a Marathi-speaking family. She went to St. Joseph's Convent School in Jalgaon and later attended Vasant Vihar High School near Mumbai. Thakur didn't finish her studies at KC College because she was focused on building her career in television.

Career

Early career and television (2012–2014)

While in college, Mrunal Thakur got her big break as Gauri Bhosle in the Star Plus series "Mujhse Kuchh Kehti...Yeh Khamoshiyaan" alongside Mohit Sehgal. This show aired from 2012 to 2013. She also made a guest appearance in the mystery thriller "Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek – Arjun" as a journalist named Sakshi Anand in 2013.

In February 2014, Thakur joined the cast of Zee TV's soap opera "Kumkum Bhagya" and began shooting the following month. She played the role of Bulbul Arora Khanna, who helps her mother run a marriage hall alongside her sister. The show, which also starred Sriti Jha, Shabir Ahluwalia, Arjit Taneja, and Supriya Shukla, premiered on April 15. Thakur received positive reviews for her performance but left the show in January 2016.

Thakur participated in reality shows like Box Cricket League 1 in 2014 and Nach Baliye 7 in 2015. She made guest appearances on shows like &TV's "SauBhagyalaxmi" and the Indonesian serial "Nadin" before retiring from television.

Expansion to Hindi films (2014–2021)

Mrunal Thakur stepped into the film industry with her debut in Marathi cinema, starring as Sandhya in "Vitti Dandu" in 2014. Following this, she appeared in another Marathi film titled "Surajya," portraying the character of Dr. Swapna.

Transitioning to Hindi cinema, Thakur began her journey with the international film "Love Sonia" in 2012, which released in 2018. In the movie, she played the lead role of a village girl who exposes the global issue of human trafficking. To prepare for her role, Thakur immersed herself in the character by staying in a brothel to observe the mannerisms of the women there. Although the film received critical acclaim, it didn't fare well at the box office in India.

Her Bollywood debut came in 2019 with "Super 30," directed by Vikas Bahl, where she portrayed Supriya, the love interest of mathematician Anand Kumar, played by Hrithik Roshan. The film became a commercial success and was among the top-grossing Hindi films of the year. The same year, she appeared in "Batla House" alongside John Abraham, playing the role of his wife Nandita Kumar. The film was also a commercial hit, grossing over ₹1.11 billion worldwide.

In 2020, Thakur featured in the Netflix horror anthology film "Ghost Stories," and she also starred in a music video titled "Gallan Goriya" alongside John Abraham.

Moving on to 2021, Thakur showcased her talent in the sports drama "Toofaan" alongside Farhan Akhtar, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. In 2022, Mrunal Thakur starred in "Jersey," a remake of a Telugu film, alongside Shahid Kapoor. Despite receiving mixed-to-positive reviews for performances and direction, the movie didn't do well commercially. She also made her Telugu debut in "Sita Ramam," a period romantic drama with Dulquer Salmaan and Rashmika Mandanna. In 2023, Thakur appeared in five films. She starred in "Gumraah," a Hindi remake of a Tamil movie, opposite Aditya Roy Kapur, which didn't perform well at the box office.
