IPL 2018: David Warner steps down as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad

In the wake of the ball tampering controversy, David Warner, one of three Australians accused, has stepped down as captain of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2018 Indian Premier League. The news was confirmed by the franchise via twitter on Wednesday.

"In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly.” – K.Shanmugam, CEO, SunRisers Hyderabad," the tweet read.

The tweet also mentioned that Warner's replacement will be named soon and it is likely that Shikhar Dhawan, who captained the franchise during 2014, will emerge as the fruntrunner for the post.

Warner's stepping down comes two days after his Australian captain Steve Smith relinquished his role as captain of Rajasthan Royals and was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane.
