Television's biggest night just wrapped up, and honestly, this year's Emmy Awards 2026 winners list had a little bit of everything - record-breaking wins, genuine surprises, and a host who finally got her due after decades on screen.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were held on September 14 at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, airing live on NBC and streaming on Peacock. For Indian audiences, the show was broadcast on JioHotstar early on September 15 morning, with the red carpet kicking off around 4:30 a.m. IST.
Mariska Hargitay, best known for playing Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, hosted Emmys 2026 for the very first time. Heading into the night, HBO Max's The Pitt led the nomination count with 25 nods, followed closely by Apple TV's freshman hit Widow's Bay with 19.

The Biggest Moments From Emmys 2026
A few things happened this year that genuinely made Emmy history, and they're worth calling out before we get to the full list.
Jean Smart won her fifth Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award for playing Deborah Vance on Hacks, which means she has now won the category for every single season the show has aired - something not even six-time Veep winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus managed to pull off. Across her career, Smart's acting wins now tie her with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the most in Emmy history.
Matthew Rhys had an equally historic night, becoming the first performer ever to win two lead acting Emmys at the same ceremony - Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay and Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
And Widow's Bay itself walked away with a record-breaking 14 Emmys across the main ceremony and the earlier Creative Arts Emmys, setting a new single-year record for a comedy series and beating the previous record held by The Studio.

The Pitt and Widow's Bay: A Closer Look
The Pitt, HBO Max's hour-by-hour emergency room drama, won Outstanding Drama Series for the second year running, along with a second consecutive Lead Actor win for Noah Wyle. For a show that only debuted last year, that's a genuinely strong repeat performance, and it makes The Pitt one of the standout names on this Emmy Awards 2026 winners list.
On the comedy side, Widow's Bay was clearly the story of the night. Set in a cursed New England town and blending horror with comedy, the Apple TV freshman series knocked out last year's winner, Hacks, for Outstanding Comedy Series, while also picking up wins for Stephen Root, Kate O'Flynn, Betty Gilpin, Matthew Rhys, and writer-producer Katie Dippold. Stephen Root's win was a genuine upset too, since he beat out fan favourite Harrison Ford, who was nominated for Shrinking.
