Frequently, one encounters indie movies that are not heavily marketed like blockbusters, yet still make a lasting impression with their simple and straightforward storytelling. 'Tikdam', starring Amit Sial, successfully accomplished just that. The movie, starring child actors Divyansh Dwivedi, Aarohi Sau, and Arisht Jain, takes place in a small hilly town and tackles themes such as family connections, environmental issues, and the importance of unity within a community.
The movie takes place in a tiny town nestled among hills, called Sukhtal. The environment, combined with the straightforward approach of the film, transports you to a nostalgic journey. The focus of the narrative is on the brother and sister duo Samay (Arisht Jain) and Cheeni (Aarohi Sau). The pair, along with their close friend Bhanu (Divyansh Dwivedi), discover a Tikdam or some technique to accomplish their tasks. The siblings reside with their father, Prakash, who is excessively innocent.
After Prakash is let go from his position at a nearby hotel, he must figure out a solution to support his family, including his parents.
Although he did not want to move to the city to be near his family, he must reconsider due to the lack of job opportunities in his town. The strength of the movie is its straightforwardness. With children in the main roles, there is a special innocence that adds both amusement and warmth. Using their works, Vivek Anchalia, Pankaj Nihalani, and Animesh Verma delve into the issue of individuals relocating to urban areas in search of improved prospects, sometimes involuntarily, and the lasting impact of ecological shifts. The authors also aim to increase consciousness regarding climate change, while avoiding the overly optimistic attitude where solutions are simple.
Anchalia is the film's director as well. Although the initial part and progression could have been sharper, the delay leading up to the climax also contributes to the nostalgic feel of 'Tikdam'.
The acting in the movie enhances the enjoyment. Amit Sial plays the role of Prakash, a naive man who is devoted to his family and hopes to remain near his children. The child actors, Divyansh Dwivedi, Aarohi Sau, and Arisht Jain, display excellent screen presence. The three of them have a great rapport and Dwivedi's line delivery is excellent.
The special mention should go to the cinematography and the music. Cinematographer Parth Sayani perfectly captures the laid-back and leisurely atmosphere of the hilly countryside, with music by Daniel B Goerge seamlessly enhancing the storytelling. Additionally, Mohit Chauhan is back as the playback singer for the movie.
In summary, 'Tikdam' is a straightforward and lovely movie that feels like enjoying a cup of hot chocolate during a chilly or rainy afternoon. Watch it with your whole family - kids and adults will both find enjoyment and take something different from it.
