Indian archer Atanu Das surprised South Korean Oh Jin-Hyek in a magnificent finish to reach the 1/8 knockout round in the men's individual archery event at Yunoshima qualifying range on Thursday.
Indian archer Atanu Das surprised South Korean Oh Jin Hyek with an impressive finishing touch to reach the 1/8 knockout round in the men's singles shooting event at the Yumenoshima qualifying arena on Thursday at Tokyo Olympics. The third-seeded Korean started the match 8-9-9 and Das responded 8-8-9 to give Jin Hyek two points in the first set. Das came strong in the second set for three for nine seconds, Oh lost his chance to take the two points after hitting an 8 on the last arrow.
The third set had the same result with both shooters sharing the points. Gene Hayek 8-10-9 and an Indian goal 9-9-9. Atanu responded with his back to the wall brilliantly and made the fourth set 8-9-10 and the Korean responded with 9-7-6 to force the winner.
The fifth set put both shooters' nerves to the test as they again shared points and advanced to penalties.
With his first goal in the penalty shootout, Jinhyek fired the shot to which Atano responded with a superb 10 and sealed the match. With this victory, he qualified for the round of 16.
Earlier in the day, Atano defeated Yu-cheng Dang of Chinese Taipei at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics 6-4 in the 1/32 knockout round.
