As food starts to run out and violent sandstorms destroy Earth's crops, the planet's inhabitants realise their time here is running out.

As a strong survival movie  storm approaches, the situation deteriorates and Commander Lewis decides to call off their operation. Watney begs to wait out the storm, but he loses sight of his crew when a satellite dish is ripped loose amid the mayhem and hits him, separating him from the squad.

Lewis unwillingly leaves Watney behind, believing him dead, as he guides the rest of the crew back to the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) as visibility rapidly diminishes.Goddard, who turned the book into a screenplay, was originally slated to direct, but it wasn't until Scott took over as director and Damon was chosen to play the lead that production was given the go-ahead.

Glass's peaceful existence with his Pawnee wife and son, which is cruelly destroyed when their home is set on fire, is revealed in flashbacks.After being mauled by a bear and abandoned for dead by his own hunting team, a frontiersman on a fur trading mission in the 1820s battles for his life.
