Nithilan Swaminathan's Tamil action thriller Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, premiered in Chinese cinemas in November of last year. In slightly more than a month, the movie is approaching the Rs 100 crore milestone and has become the top-grossing Indian film in China in five years, as stated by a Chinese embassy representative.
Yu Jing, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, provided an update regarding Maharaja's performance at the box office in China on her X account. She shared a movie poster with the caption, "Maharaja has become the top-grossing Indian film in China since 2018, earning Rs 91.55 crore.
Maharaja is the inaugural Indian movie to premiere in China after the accord in October 2024, which seeks to normalize relations between the nations, resolving the standoff in eastern Ladakh.

As per reports, the film garnered approximately RMB 13.37 million (Rs 15.6 crore) on its first day in November 2024. The film, scored 8.7/10 on the Chinese review site Douban, is considered "among the highest-rated Indian movies in recent years."
Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja features Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and Natty Natraj as well. The narrative centers around Maharaja, a Chennai barber, who goes to a police station to recover his stolen dustbin, resulting in unforeseen events.

One day, the Maharaja goes to the nearby police station to report a theft, stating that Lakshmi has been stolen from, which greatly amuses the officers. He describes the event: a group of armed men broke into his home, assaulted him, and abducted Lakshmi. The police are reluctant to put in the effort to locate an empty dustbin but agree once he offers a bribe of Rs 5 lakhs for the offenders.
