Not every film gets the golden ticket to Hollywood’s most prestigious stage, the Oscars.
Despite India's rich cinematic history, only a handful of movies have made it to the Academy Awards spotlight. One such hopeful event this year was Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies.
But, not every journey ends in a fairytale. Here's the story of how Laapataa Ladies fell short in its Oscar dream while carving a special place in Indian cinema.
Laapataa Ladies At Oscars
Kiran Rao's directorial 'Laapataa Ladies', which represented India in the Best Foreign Language Film category, is no longer in the Oscars competition. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees in 10 categories for the forthcoming 97th Oscars event.
Laapataa Ladies, helmed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios, debuted in cinemas on March 1, 2024. The movie includes performances by Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam.
About The Movie Laapataa Ladies
Set in the countryside of India, Laapataa Ladies tells the tale of two young brides who are unintentionally exchanged on a train.
Helmed by Kiran Rao, the movie explores themes of economic autonomy, women's dreams, and personal growth, providing an invigorating perspective on feminism and patriarchy.

Laapataa Ladies Earnings At Box Office
As reported, the film earned Rs 20.58 crore in India over its 13-week cinema run. The film's total earnings reached Rs 27.06 crore, with Rs 2.75 crore from international markets and Rs 24.31 crore from India. According to media sources, the film was produced with approximately Rs 5 crore.
In the meantime, the film's crew, featuring director Kiran Rao and producer Aamir Khan, has already begun the campaign for the Oscars 2025.
The movie was shown in London not long ago. On November 12, a fresh poster for the movie was revealed featuring the title 'Lost Ladies'. It emphasized a shift for global viewers, as the Hindi term Laapataa was translated to its English equivalent, Lost.
Which other film starring Amir Khan reached the Oscars?
Significantly, Aamir Khan's legendary Lagaan was the final Indian movie to achieve a position among the top five nominations for Best International Feature Film (previously Best Foreign Film) at the 2002 Academy Awards.
Other movies such as Rang De Basanti (2006) and Taare Zameen Par (2007) were chosen as India's official submissions but failed to secure an Oscar nomination.
In conclusion, while Laapataa Ladies may not have made it to the Oscars, its impactful storytelling and exploration of women's lives have left a lasting impression. It’s a reminder that meaningful cinema transcends awards and accolades.
