Call Me Bae teaser: Karan Johar casts Ananya Panday in rich-to-poor South Delhi character

After launching Ananya Panday in Bollywood with Student of the Year 2, Karan Johar is now set to introduce her to the OTT world with his upcoming web series Call Me Bae. The makers recently released a satirical trailer featuring Ananya in a rocket, while Karan carefully plans her OTT debut.

The sharp and humorous trailer opens with Ananya and Karan at a rocket launch station, where Karan is quite literally preparing for her OTT launch. Ananya, adorned with sparkling diamonds, asks, “What are you doing?” To which Karan cheekily responds that he’s launching her on OTT, adding humorously, “We live once, die once, but we can be launched multiple times.” The witty writing continues as Karan Johar describes his vision for Ananya's dream role—something challenging and unique for her career. However, Ananya interjects, suggesting, “Like a poor girl from Mirza-poor.”

Karan quickly dismisses this, insisting, “You will play a rich girl from South Delhi.” Ananya initially hesitates, pointing out that she’s often cast as a “bougie princess,” but Karan clarifies that this time, her character will be a wealthy girl who loses everything and struggles to survive in Mumbai. The trailer then offers a glimpse of the show, with Ananya’s character cleaning a restaurant and wandering the streets of Mumbai.

Fans were quick to draw comparisons between the show’s plot and the American series 2 Broke Girls, likening Ananya’s character to Caroline Channing. One fan commented, “She is definitely Caroline… but who is Max?” Another added, “It looks like Caroline from 2 Broke Girls. Who’s Max?” These comparisons suggest a strong resemblance in the storyline and characters.
