Known for his versatile acting, Rajkummar Rao delivers a consistent performance and brings depth to his character's determination and struggles. Janhvi Kapoor also shows improvement in her acting skills as she portrays Mahima's mix of vulnerability and strength. Their chemistry is visible and their performances are among the few highlights of the film. However, the film struggles with its script, which tries to juggle too many themes and dilutes its impact. It tries to deal with gender issues, personal ambitions and the politics of cricket, but none of these topics are explored in the depth they deserve. This scattered focus results in a story that feels disjointed and unfocused.
Sharan Sharma's direction is somewhat competent but does not bring a cohesive vision to the film. The cricket series were well filmed but lacked the intensity and excitement expected from a sports drama. The film also has pacing issues as some parts drag while others feel rushed.
Visually the film is attractive with good production value. The film effectively captures the essence of small town India and the cricket ground. However, the music doesn't leave a lasting impression and feels more like an afterthought than an important part of the story.
Finally, “Mr. and Mrs. Mahi' is a film with a lot of potential that remains unfulfilled; the strong performances of Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor are overshadowed by a weak script and an inconsistent film that tries to play multiple innings at once but falters as a cricket drama.
