5 Films That Bombed At The Box Office But Later Gained Cult Status!

This is a list of films that became cult favorites despite doing horribly at the box office when they first came out.

1.Andaz Apna Apna

Andaz Apna Apna

Andaz Apna Apna was released right after Salman Khan delivered the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya and Aamir Khan delivered two blockbuster movies including Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Dil. In this film, both the stars weaved the magic of their turbulent chemistry, but it turned out to be a complete flop at the box office.

Neither the duo's antics nor Shakti Kapoor's legendary dialogues nor the hilarious confusion created by Paresh Rawal's dual roles impressed the audience at that time. But thanks to the private television channels that finally gave the film the appreciation it deserves.

The film is said to have performed better in Mumbai compared to other regions. However, it failed to make a significant impact at the time of its release. According to various reports, Andaz Apna Apna made a profit of only Rs 5 million. However, today Andaz Apna Apna is one of the best comedies Bollywood has ever produced. So much so that many actors, including Ranveer Singh, want to take part in the remake. For starters, a remake of the film is already in the works. Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh will reportedly reprise the roles of Salman and Aamir Khan.

2. Jaane bhi do yaaro

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro

Did you know that Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro was re-released in 2012? NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) in collaboration with director PVR Rare has re-released Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro in theatres. But it wasn't a huge hit when it was originally released.

This political satire is still very relevant today. Is this the reason the film failed at the box office? Many people argue that the film was ahead of its time and that is why it did not catch on with the audience at the right time.

Despite its failure at the box office, no film has been made to date that highlights the many problems experienced by Indian society in a light-hearted manner that contains nothing but humor and sarcasm. Maybe that's what makes it a cult film now.

3. Dil Chahta Hai

Dil Chahta Hai

Dil Chahta Hai minted just Rs 15.75 crore, which is slightly more than what Aamir Khan's biggest flop Mela made: Rs 13.25 crore. The film that is close to the hearts of all children of the 90s is still considered one of the classic films that redefined friendship and motivated young people to follow their hearts and dreams. No one imagined then that a film about three college students, who ruined their lives and confounded their aspirations, would find a place in people's hearts and continue to have an impact on young people decades later.

4. Pyar ka Punchnama

Pyar Ka Puchnama

In 2011, Luv Ranjan made his debut with a film that had a new cast and new faces. No one who worked on this film had any significant connection to the world of cinema. It was bound to go unnoticed. But gradually, as Raju's six-minute speech spread on social media, millennials took notice. And when they saw the movie, they loved it. ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ is still remembered for lead actor Kartik Aaryan's women-bashing monologue. Due to the film's success, a sequel was produced that audiences found more entertaining than the first part.

5. Sholay

Sholay

Despite having a top-notch cast, Sholay was declared a flop by media critics in the first week of its release. Ramesh Sippy was so disappointed that he thought of reshooting the ending of the film so that Amitabh Bachchan's character could live on. Later, the makers released a soundtrack containing a few bits of dialogue and suddenly the film caught people's attention and became an overnight sensation.

At the Filmfare Awards that year, Sholay was nominated in several categories but did not win a single award in the popularity category.
