Treat your tastebuds with these popular Gujarati dishes

Have you ever been invited to a Gujarati wedding? If yes, we’re already jealous and if no, we shall give you a list of reasons why you shouldn’t miss attending one.

Usually, Gujarati food is only associated with khakra and dhokla. But hey! That’s not an exhaustive list. Being one of the oldest culinary gifts to our country, it has a very different cooking style. It consists of an array of vegetarian dishes and a perfect amalgamation of sweet and sour flavors. It is absolutely no enigma that Gujaratis are known for the exquisite love they possess for food.

Presenting to you some of the most popular and well-known dishes which I’m sure you shouldn’t miss!

Mutiya

Named after the action that is used to shape the dough, these fist-cakes make for a great breakfast or evening snack. Best relished with a dash of mint-coriander chutney or ketchup, and a cup of steaming hot tea.

Undhiyu

The king of Gujarati dishes Undhiyu (and of course Uttarayan) is the reason why a Gujarati eagerly awaits winter. It derives its name from the Gujarati word, and meaning inverted, it is a classical Gujarati dish made in an inverted clay pot.

Rotlo

A common food of many in the state of Gujarat now is becoming an attraction in hotel menus of other states too. Rotlo is bread made of Maize or Millet flour, often taken along with raw white onion, green chilies, Ringan Odeo, and buttermilk.

Handwa

Be it a breakfast, lunch or dinner, a Gujju would never deny the Handva offered to her. Handva, a single-layered thick bread is cooked either in pressure cookers or Handva cookers (yes, we have specially designed cookers for it here!)

Khandvi

It can be a perfect breakfast or snack in the evenings because the thin layers rolled up with goodness and sprinkled with few other spices is simply aromatic and makes it irresistible to indulge in this delectable snack.

Thepla

I can bet on this. No Gujarati journey, long trip or a short picnic is complete without thepla. These are one of the healthiest snacks and the best part is that it has a long shelf life. Pairing it up with a cup of steaming tea or pickle is a great idea.

Dhokla

It is a dish which is made from rice and chickpeas and often served with green chutney. The softness of this namkeen and its sponginess makes it the best part. I assure you after eating one, you would ask for another one!
