I Am Seeing Double: Some of Our Favourite Double Role Movies in Bollywood

As kids we've all heard of the 'kumbh mela story'. A pair of identical twins goes to the kumbh ka mela with their mom, and due to the immense crowd, one gets lost and loses sight of the family. These two then reunite in a couple of decades and are pitted against each other... Bollywood used to strive on these stories.
We have seen the storylines evolve over the years with better character development and realistic plots.
Below are a few of our favourite movies with actors who have been on both sides of the coin.

1. Ram aur Shyam

This movie set the benchmark for all double role movies. Dilip Kumar played the classic - separated at birth, grow up to be complete opposites, end up in each other's lives. This classic went on to inspire a lot of like-minded films.

2. Seeta aur Geeta

Dream Girl Hema Malini's movie was the talk of the town due to its full-on masala and comedy content. The successful movie is a must-watch even today because of the actress' wonderful acting and portrayal of the two antithetical characters.

3. Don

This film's dialogues and songs are such which will always be afresh in the minds of all movie buffs. One of the best double role movies, the angry young man Amitabh Bachchan hit it out of the ballpark with his phenomenal acting. The movie also saw a remake in 2006 with SRK.

4. Angoor

One of the best comedy movies ever made in Bollywood, Angoor is the story of two pairs of identical twins and the havoc they cause when they accidentally swap lives. The movie based on Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors sees Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in double roles.

5. Judwaa

One of Salman Khan's most famous movies, Judwaa is yet remembered for two reasons - 1. Bhai's hilarious role as a tapori and 2. 'Lift teri bandh hai,' & 'Tan tana tan tan tan tara'. The movie also saw a remake with Varun Dhawan portraying the 2 roles, but the original still is our favourite.

6. Kaho Na Pyaar Hai

A movie with a not so similar plot, Hrithik Roshan plays the role of the 2 lead protagonists with the physical appearance being the only thing they have in common. The biggest hit of the year, the movie won several awards and was listed in the Guinness World Records and the Limca Book of Records for the greatest number of awards bagged by a Bollywood feature film.

7. Kaminey

One brother with a lisp and one with a stuttering problem, this movie by Vishal Bhardwaj is one of Shahid Kapoor's best performances as an actor. The award-winning movie received widespread acclaim and praise and was quoted as 'Movie of the year' by critics all around.

8. Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Another must-watch, this movie worked so well majorly on the basis of the tremendous acting by lead actress Kangana Ranaut. Kangana Ranaut aced the two roles, of Tanu (from Tanu weds Manu) and of Kusum, a young athlete, pulling off a great Haryani accent. She even went on to receive a National Award for Best Actress.

9. Mubarakan

A light no-brainer comedy, Mubarakan is best enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon with a couple of friends. The movie revolves around 2 brothers - played by Arjun Kapoor - and a comical twist of events of their family trying to get them married while they have their own love interests.
