Saumya Tandon: “She (Anita) is one-of-a-kind ‘Bhabhi’ on Indian TV”

Saumya Tandon, is currently ruling the TRP charts as ‘Anita Bhabhi’ from hit TV show ‘Bhabhije Ghare Pe Hai’. Produced by Binaifer and Sanjay Kohli's (Edit II) the show holds a special place in the actress’s heart.  The show which was launched in 2015 was a sleeper hit and later picked up space on the small screen. Audience loved each and every character but especially the lead pairs which include Saumya Tandon (Anita), Asif Shaikh (Vibhuti), Shubhangi Atre (Angoori) and Rohitashv Gour (Manomohan Tiwari). Saumya’s sophisticated and no-nonsense ‘Anita’ was well received by the viewers.

“I can unhesitatingly say that the show is one of the best on Indian TV. I had not attempted doing comedy ever and I explored this genre with one of the best producer-director and writer in comedy on TV. I was very reluctant to join the daily soap bandwagon but I am glad I picked this show. I tried and explored a lot of things as an actor in this show and I did evolve as an actor,” Saumya says.

Talking about ‘Anita’, Saumya says, “I play ‘Gori Mem’ Anita Bhabhi’s character. I feel she is one-of-a-kind Bhabhi on Indian TV. When all the heroines of Indian TV are poor innocent women crying for help all the time, battered by husbands and in-laws, Anita is wacky, bold, romantic, strong and independent. She breaks all norms of a stereotypical Bhabhi or a TV heroine. In such a male-dominated society if she has managed to steal people’s hearts that shows our society is not all that regressive. She has shown the world that heroines can get TRPs even laughing and not just by crying.”

Coincidently, Saumya shares similarities with her on-screen character. “I am strong and independent just like Anita. I wish I could make all men dance around on my fingers, that don’t happen in real life. On-screen Anita has a house husband, who she keeps nagging to work. Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong if the wife works outside and a husband works at home. There are no rules in life. Equality is what I believe in and men and women should not be bound by stereotypes,” Saumya confirmed.

The show is special for her as it has given her the chance to work with the reputed TV show producers, Binaifer and Sanjay Kohli. “They have given me total freedom to work as an actor. I had requested them to allow me to style myself for the show and they readily agreed. The clothes I have worn in the show are loved by all and they are different from whatever one sees on TV. The makers trusted me and they never interfered. Also, they have given me one of the boldest, strongest and an independent TV heroine’s role, which is a rarity on small screen. Their shoot is always on time and we hardly ever do overtime work. Their shoots are organised and efficient which is a boon for daily soaps since we work every day,” the lovely actress said, before signing off.
