Urmila Matondkar, born on 4th February, 1974 in a middle class Maharashtrian family started her acting career as a child actor in movies like ‘Masoom’ and ‘Kalyug’. She debuted as an actress in Bollywood with ‘Chamatkar’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 1992. After completing more than two decades in Hindi film industry which include many blockbusters, the actress tied knot with Kashmiri businessman, Mohsin Akhtar Mir in 2016. As the silver screen’s ‘sex goddess’ turns a year older, let’s reminisce about some of the landmark movies in Urmila’s film career-
Rangeela (1995)
Urmila’s innocent yet ambitious ‘Milli Joshi’ in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rangeela’ changed the game for her in glam industry. The director showcased Urmila in a never seen before light, for which she was nominated in ‘Filmfare Best Actress’ category.
Satya (1998)
Even thought the movie was a hardcore underworld action drama, Urmila’s simple middle class girl ‘Vidya’ stood apart from other characters. Her flawless acting made ‘Vidya’ appealing to the audience.
Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001)
Urmila took the challenge of playing negative character of obsessed lover in Rajat Mukherjee’s ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’. Urmila suited the bill perfectly as rich, stubborn ‘Ria’ in this unusual love story. Urmila flaunting her sensuous curves in the ‘Kambhakt Ishq’ song was the highlight of the movie.
Pinjar (2003)
It was a herculean task for commerical actress like Urmila to shed her image and adopt a totally non-glamorous role of ‘Puro/ Hamida’ in Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s acclaimed movie ‘Pinjar’. Urmila proved her acting calibre in this unique role with simplicity and conviction.
Tehzeeb (2003)
In the same year, Urmila also played the title role in Khalid Mohammed’s ‘Tehzeeb’. The movie talked about troubled mother daughter-duo and Urmila once again played daughter to her ‘Masoom’ on-screen mother Shabana Azmi. Both complimented each other, resulting in garnering praises for their fabulous performance.
Though Urmila has taken a sabbatical after her marriage, the audience would love to see this wonderful actress working her magic on silver screen once again.
Here is wishing Urmila many fulfilling years ahead, on her Birthday!
