For movie lovers, the last two years have been disappointing. With the arrival of Covid-19 and its many variants, the public was not only scared and deprived of the magic of the collective experience of watching movies in a crowded movie theater, but many filmmakers and actors also waited anxiously to see the movie. . The correct version of his movies. While several major movies were shown in theaters last year and had some success, they were a far cry from what everyone used to enjoy in the pre-pandemic era.
The biggest casualty of the pandemic has been watching big movies being forced to be shown in the streaming space instead of on the big screen. The push was nothing more than business and relevance: streaming services offered a lucrative way to avoid any further delays, and filmmakers fear their product will become irrelevant if they wait too long in an unpredictable pandemic. Now, with the Omicron variant in full force, theaters can continue on hiatus until the situation stabilizes further.
The pandemic has also drastically changed the tastes of Bollywood moviegoers. In the pre-pandemic period, the star system was dominated by All Khans, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, etc. It would not reach this position within the limits of traditional cinema. What will be interesting to see in the future is whether theatrical performances will resume as before or just be considered a "picnic" where only blockbuster movies will be seen in theaters while all other genres find their place on live broadcasts.
In 2022, audiences can still expect to see some of the most highly anticipated best Bollywood movies in some form, whether through theaters returning in full force or on a streaming platform. Here's a list of some of the most anticipated movies of 2022. Note that this isn't an exhaustive list, it's just as derivative as some of next year's notable movies. Happy New Year and Happy Watching.
1. Prithviraj
The first big premiere of the year starring the man who never rests: Akshay Kumar. This historical epic tells the story of Prithviraj Chauhan and his love for Princess Sanyukta, played by Miss World Manushi Chhillar in her film debut. Produced by Aditya Chopra, this film is directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, whose successful films included Pinjar and the classic television series Chanakya. With the debut of Chillar, as well as celebrating Yash Raj Films' first true historical epic, expectations are high. Dwivedi is known for carefully researching his projects, and we hope the film continues that trend. However, the trailer reveals minor hangovers for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but only time will tell once the best Hindi movie is released this year.
2. Gangubai Kathiawadi
Every film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Black, Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Guzaarish, Saawariya, Padmavat) is special, so it's no surprise that his latest director made this list. The film, starring the powerful female lead Alia Bhatt, tells the true story of a famous brothel owner, certainly in SLB's great visual style. Interesting fact, SLP initially planned a big romance with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt, but differences between Khan and the director put an end to the project. Still wanting to work with Alia, SLB shot this long-awaited movie. Without a doubt, this will be another great work from the director starring one of the most talented actresses in India.
3 Jayeshbhai Jordaar
The second edition of Yash Raj Films of the year, this social comedy stars Ranveer Singh and newcomer Shalini Panday. Directed by newcomer Divyang Thakur, not much is known about this film, but anything Ranvir Singh does will be interesting
4. Shamshera
Another Yash Raj Films production, this epic drama dacoit marks the return of Ranbir Kapoor after the 2018 film Sanju. This film also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vani Kapoor and begins a new phase of Ranbir films. Having starred in several offbeat and critically acclaimed films, the actor has stated that he now wants to focus his career on some commercially viable projects, having established himself as an excellent actor. Hopefully, this long-awaited movie will see the light of day in 2022 after being in the works for several years. Directed by Karan Malhotra (Agnipath, Brothers)
5. Bhool Bhulaiya 2
This spiritual sequel to the 2007 horror-comedy doesn't star Akshay Kumar or Vidya Balan, but there's still plenty of reason to be excited. Kartik Aryan leads the pack this time, with Tabu and Kiara Advani under the direction of comedian Anees Bazmee (No Entry, Hello, Blessed, Singh Es Kenning, Ready). Not much is known about the plot, but the horror-comedy has significantly raised its profile in Bollywood after STREE, and one is hoping that this movie will continue to see this growing trend.
6. Anek
Director Anubhav Sinha (Dos, Cash, Tom Penn, Thapad, Article 15, King) has taken a giant turn on the kind of movies he's making now. He started out with a dumb pot kettle commercial, now he's a plucky filmmaker focused on new social issues. This film marks his second collaboration with Ayushman Khurrana, with whom he had previously worked on Article 15. Given Khurrana's interest in unique scripts, one can expect this thriller to be off the charts as well. Highly expected
7. Doctor G
Another Ayushmann Khurrana movie release, this social comedy is the directorial debut of Anubhuti Kashyap. Rakul Preet Singh also stars. Khurana reportedly plays the role of a gynecologist in the film. Everything he does makes for an interesting cinematic experience, and it can be said with confidence that no matter how the film is shown, he will push the envelope towards new stories in Hindi cinema.
8. Bachchan Pandey
Akshay Kumar stars with Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez in this action-revenge film directed by Farhad Samji (Housefull 4). The poster promises an intense new avatar for Akshay, showing him with a dhoti, mustache and tikka on his head. Akshay always excels in action roles and fans of him hope to see him in that space again with this movie.
9. Bhediya
Varun Dhawan stars with Kriti Sanon in this horror-comedy, which is India's first werewolf film. Directed by Amar Kaushik (Street, Pala), we know the film is in good hands. Personally, I am very excited about this genre because it is a literary genre that I was wondering why Indian cinema was never properly explored as it has so much potential. Furthermore, the film takes place in the same universe as Stree and 2021 Roohi, creating India's first monster cinematic world.
10. Jug Jugg Jeeyo
Dharma Productions presents this thrilling family comedy starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor, and Neetu Singh. Plot details are under wraps but the movie is directed by Raj Mehta who directed the hit movie Good Newwz. Given Karan Johar's penchant for greenlighting the best projects for his company, there's no doubt that this film will offer something new as well.
11. Cirkus
No year is complete without directing Rohit Shetty (Simmba, Sooryavanshi, Singham series, Golmaal, Chennai Express) and 2022 will be no different. This comedy starring Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez is rumored to be an adaptation of the Angkorian and Shakespearean classic The Comedy of Errors. With Shetty's track record of success and many great supporting actors regularly seen in his films, CIRKUS is destined to be another blockbuster in Rohit Shetty's cinematic world.
12. Vikram Vedha Remake
The last time we saw Hrithik Roshan was in 2019 with consecutive successes in SUPER 30 and WAR. The star returns to this emotion in 2022, playing a criminal on the run from a policeman (played by Saif Ali Khan). The film is a remake of a southern flick, which will co-star Radhika Apte. With Roshan's penchant for selecting unique settings and the highly anticipated game of cat and mouse between him and Khan, this movie is one of the most anticipated of the year.
13. Adipurush
Director Om Raut made one of the few successful movies in 2020 with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Raut is back with this expensive adaptation of Ramayan starring Prabhas as Shri Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita and Saif Ali Khan as Ravan. Given the lavish expected production values and all-star cast, this is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Hopefully, it will be released without any unnecessary controversy and provide audiences with an adaptation of the story that future generations will appreciate.
14. Laal Singh Chaddha
After the disastrous flop of Thugs of Hindostan in 2018, Aamir Khan returns with this film starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and directed by Advait Chandan (Secret Superstar). Khan has had an impressive film record over the last 20 years, achieving just 2 averages, 1 flop, and the rest historical blockbusters. This movie is a new version of the classic Forrest Gump, adapted to the Indian sensibility. Aamir's dream project, fans can rest assured that he gave the film everything he could, which has been in the works for the past three years. As long as the film offers something new and the performances aren't clichéd, this should be an unforgettable experience for fans, as Khan's other films have been.
15. Pathan
SRK has taken a long time off from movies since 2018 after a series of lackluster and unsuccessful film disasters, with their last film being Terrible Zero. Khan, whose popularity and talent remain unchanged, turned to his favorite Yash Raj Films for that commercial success that has eluded him for the past five years. This global spy thriller also co-stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham and is directed by Siddharth Anand (Salam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Bum, Bachna Ai Haseno, Anjana Anjani, Bang Bang, War) and is expected to be a high-octane scene. with scenes never seen before in Bollywood movies. A fun fact is that they take place in the same universe as Salman Khan's Tiger movies and Hrithik's War, meaning these characters are expected to converge at some point. While I would have preferred Khan to come back with a mature romance or content-driven story, I hope this movie pushes the boundaries of action movies in India.
16. Tiger 3
After the record-breaking success of Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif return in this third installment of the popular spy series, this time directed by Maneesh Sharma (Band Baaja Baaraat, Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl, Fan). This is expected to be the biggest yet in the franchise as it is filmed around the world and features Emran Hashmi as the main villain. After some neglected movies of the last few years, Salman needs a big hit that brings not only numbers but also critical acclaim. Hopefully this is the movie that does just that. Aditya Chopra returns as a producer for this project.
17. Brahmastra
This feature film in the fantasy science fiction industry is highly anticipated. Produced by Karan Johar, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. Expected to be part of a trilogy, the film is expected to push the boundaries of Indian cinema and present Ranbir in an avatar like never before. Directed by Ayan Mukherjee (Wake Up Syed, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani). Ranbir always chooses funny movies, although not always successful ones. This film was a great bet in his career, almost 5 years in the making, so one can only hope that it lives up to the great expectation that surrounds it.
18. Maharaja
Another Aditya Chopra movie, this one is highly anticipated as it marks the debut of Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan. A thriller based on a true story, this film is highly anticipated as audiences will finally see Ibn Aamer on the big screen. Time will tell if the young actor can match his father's precision, but the film will be an eye-opening experience nonetheless. Directed by Siddharth B Malhotra (We Are Family, Hichki).
19. Ram Setu
Akshay Kumar's cinematic streak continues with this drama directed by Abhishek Sharma (Teri Bin Laden, Shokins, Parmanu, Siraj B Mangal Bahari). Produced by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi (with whom Akshay worked on PRITHVIRAJ), not much is known about this film except that Akshay plays an archaeologist in the film and that Jaqueline Fernandez and Nushrat Bharrucha co-star. Akshay always makes different movies out of the box and I think this movie will provide a unique story worth watching.
20. Action Hero
Ayushman Khurrana stars in this bizarre film directed by Anirudh Iyer and produced by Anand L Rai (Tannu Weds Manu Series, Zero, Rangana, Atranji Rey). Described as a Bollywood satire, it would be exciting to see Ayushmann as part of a film that isn't based on a social theme. Expect the unexpected with this!
21. Raksha Bandhan
After the huge success of Atrangi Re, Aanand L.Rai directed Akshay Kumar once again in this sweet family drama, co-starring Bhumi Pednekar. Although the story is unknown, it is expected to revolve around the man's relationship with his sisters. There hasn't been a movie with good family values in a long time and there's no question this one would be cocky.
22. OMG 2- Oh My God!
Amit Rai directs this spiritual sequel to the hit movie Oh My God. Akshay Kumar returns in this sequel as Lord, except this time he plays Lord Shiva, after having played Lord Vishnu in the first film. Paresh Rawal is not in the film this time, but the talented Pankaj Tripathi has been cast. Expect a movie full of emotion and social satire when it is released sometime this year.
