Actor-producer Sohum Shah and his production company, Sohum Shah Films, have announced a partnership with Pen Studios, headed by industry veteran Jayantilal Gada, for “Tumbbad 2,” the eagerly awaited follow-up to the cult horror film.

The announcement follows the impressive box office revival of the 2018 original, with its 2024 re-release in India earning $1.5 million — highlighting the film’s lasting charm that has elevated it from a sleeper hit to a defining masterpiece of its genre.

“Tumbbad,” which chronicles a greedy village boy’s quest for a devil-guarded ancestral treasure, became the first Indian film to premiere at the Venice Critics’ Week in 2018. The horror film weaved together mythology and fantasy elements.
With “Tumbbad 2,” the creators assure a deeper exploration of the universe that transformed fantasy-horror in Indian film. The project has the support of Pen Studios, known for titles like “Sita Ramam” and Berlinale film “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” and is scheduled to start production early next year.
Tumbbad Re-Release Box Office Collection
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced by the actor through his company Sohum Shah Films, the eerie horror drama garnered positive reviews upon its theatrical release on October 12, 2018. It received critical praise but was a commercial disappointment, earning just Rs 12 crore.
Nonetheless, it has changed the situation on the second occasion. In its second run at the domestic box office, actor-producer Sohum Shah's Tumbbad has garnered Rs 25.75 crore over eleven days. It returned to theaters on September 13 due to fan demand and performed exceptionally well in its second run.
