Grey's Anatomy producer reveals REAL reason for Patrick Dempsey's exit; Claims he was 'terrorizing the set'

If there are one character fans who are still upset when it comes to Grey's Anatomy, it's definitely Patrick Dempsey's Dr. Derek Sheperd. While there have been a number of speculations about the same over the years, Gray's Anatomy's new book How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey's Anatomy reveals some shocking details regarding Dempsey's departure from the show and more.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an excerpt from the book talks about why Dempsey's character was eventually dropped from the show. As stated by Executive Producer James D. Parriott, Shonda Rhimes wanted OG to join as the creator of the show for 14 days. The producer further added that Dempsey's behavior on the set caused "HR problems".

In the book, Parriott states, "He was somehow terrorizing the group. Some of the cast members had all kinds of PTSD. He had this control of the group where he knew he could stop production and scare people." via THR.

The producer also states that Patrick himself was tired of Gray's schedule and the inconvenience it was causing in his personal life. Speaking of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey's relationship, the producer also says, "He and Shonda were at each other's throats."

Another executive producer on the show, Jenin Renshaw, also mentioned how Dempsey's complaints about the show's long hours have also left co-star Ellen Pompeo upset. Renshaw also describes Patrick as Dempsey as "the kid in the class who wants to go for a break."

Dempsey himself also talks about the chaotic work environment at Grey's Anatomy in the book, calling it a "challenge" not to have an eleven-year schedule.
