Romantic movies have long been a staple of Bollywood, but every so often, a film comes along that dares to break the mold.
Loveyapa, directed by Advait Chandan, is one such film. As the romance genre often leans into grand gestures and predictable plots, this movie tries something different by diving into the complexities of modern relationships in the digital age.
Starring newcomers Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor, both making their big-screen debuts, Loveyapa promises a fresh perspective on love, privacy, and trust. But does it live up to the hype?
Let's take a closer look at how this Valentine’s Week release is faring with audiences, and whether it can carve a niche for itself in the crowded Bollywood romance scene.
Brief
Bollywood's affection for romantic movies is widely recognized, and this Valentine’s Week, Loveyapa seeks to offer a new viewpoint. Directed by Advait Chandan, the movie features Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor, both in their first theatrical roles. After months of promotional trailers and videos generating excitement, the movie has now premiered in theaters. However, does it meet the expectations?
Loveyapa Plot
The plot of the movie focuses on Gaurav Sachdeva (Junaid Khan) and Bani Sharma (Khushi Kapoor), who are a couple profoundly in love. Nevertheless, the situation changes when Bani’s father, Atul Kumar Sharma (Ashutosh Rana), dares them to exchange their phones for a day. What begins as an experiment quickly uncovers truths, undermining their faith in one another. The movie examines the impact of digital reliance and privacy issues on contemporary relationships.
Performance
Advait Chandan effectively portrays the nuances of today's generation and their anxieties surrounding digital matters. A notable scene in the film pays homage to Aamir Khan, showcasing a clip from one of his movies in the backdrop.
The dialogues and screenplay of the film, crafted by Sneha Desai and Siddhant Mago, keep viewers engaged all the way through. The first half establishes the narrative presented in the trailer, while the second half conveys powerful messages about topics such as body shaming, cyberbullying, and manipulated videos.

I went to watch Loveyapa with zero expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised! It turned out to be a fun and engaging film that perfectly captures the energy of Gen Z. The movie is youthful, entertaining, and has the right mix of humor and emotions.… pic.twitter.com/zypk0AT0Yy
Promising Cast
Loveyapa signifies the silver screen introduction for both Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor, who had earlier appeared in Maharaj and The Archies, respectively on OTT. Junaid effectively portrays a contemporary Delhi youth, showcasing a vastly different aspect compared to his earlier character, while Khushi infuses authenticity into her performance, enhancing the charm of each scene. The supporting ensemble, featuring Ashutosh Rana, Kiku Sharda, and Gurusha Kapoor, leaves a significant impression with their performances.
Loveyapa distinguishes itself from conventional Bollywood romances by intertwining a love story with contemporary relationship challenges.
Loveyapa Box Office Collection Day 1 Prediction
Loveyapa, featuring newcomers Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor, has hit theaters, and as anticipated, it has not made much impact, at least regarding day 1 advance bookings. Although the film's theme appears intriguing, it ultimately failed to generate the necessary buzz among its intended audience. Consequently, there was minimal activity at the ticket counters, leading to a low ticket sales figure at the Indian box office. Continue reading for an in-depth analysis!
In the midst of the soft hum at ground level and rivalry from various movies, Loveyapa has faced a significant setback. Notwithstanding the reduced ticket prices, it wrapped up the day 1 advance sales by achieving a gross of 18.36 lakh tickets sold (not including blocked seats). It involves the sale of approximately 9,800 tickets at the Indian box office. This is a bleak figure, even for newcomers.
Delhi ranks first among states with pre-sales totaling 4 lakh gross. It is succeeded by Maharashtra’s 3 lakh total. The Delhi-NCR area leads among cities by selling tickets totaling 3 lakh, with Mumbai coming in second at 2 lakh. In major cinema chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis, the movie has only sold about 3,400 tickets, which is quite disappointing.
The number of shows for Loveyapa is respectable, but it doesn't matter as the initial surge has been absent. At this point, it completely relies on the outcome of word-of-mouth.
Loveyapa brings a refreshing take on modern relationships with strong performances from its leads, but its box office struggle and slow start suggest it may need more time to truly connect with audiences.
