Disney resolves dispute with Scarlett Johansson over Black Widow's salary

Terms of the agreement between Disney and Scarlett Johansson's subsidiary, Periwinkle Entertainment, were not disclosed. Scarlette Johansson, 36, sued Disney in July, accusing the entertainment giant of breaching her contract when the company showed the film on streaming subscription service Disney + at the same time the film was in theaters.

Her complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, argued that Black Widow's double-release strategy had reduced her compensation, which she claimed was based in part on box office receipts for an exclusive show in theaters.

Disney responded at the time that the lawsuit had "no advantage" and confirmed that the studio had complied with the terms of Johansson's contract. The company also said that Johansson's lawsuit showed a "blatant disregard" for the risks to film audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The controversy has been closely watched for possible fallout in Hollywood as media companies look to build their own streaming services offering premium content to attract subscribers.

Black Widow, which opened in theaters July 9 for $ 30 on Disney +, has generated more than $ 378 million in movie theater revenue worldwide, according to movie tracking service Box Office Mojo. Disney said the feature also made about $ 60 million through streaming purchases in its first 20 days of launch.

Johansson played a fictional Russian assassin turned Avenger superhero, a role she has played in Nine Marvel movies. "I am very pleased to have been able to reach a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding Black Widow," Alan Bergman, Disney Studios director of content, said in a statement Thursday.

He said the company was looking forward to working with Johansson on "various future projects," including previously reported plans to produce and star in a film based on Disney's tours of the Tower of Terror theme park.

Johansson said she too was happy to resolve her differences with the company and looked forward to furthering collaboration. "I am very proud of the work we have done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team," she said in his statement.

Johansson topped Forbes magazine's list of the world's highest-paid actresses in 2018 and 2019, with total earnings before tax of $ 56 million from June 2018 to June 2019.
