Briefing the media on the treatment, Kejriwal said four COVID-19 patients at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital got plasma therapy and also the results are encouraging.
"Two patients got plasma on Tuesday, while two got the therapy on Thursday. The 2 patients who received plasma on Tuesday have shown improvement," Kejriwal said.
Those who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate plasma for the treatment for the ill, CM made an appeal.
Urging people to leap forward for plasma donation, Kejriwal said: "We won't take blood but only plasma. Your blood goes back in the body after the plasma is separated and used.
"We are giving it to very serious patients. We are saving lives with this, you may help serious patients. All arrangements will be made for those willing to donate."
Kejriwal said all recovered patients will get a call from the government body if they want to donate their plasma.
He further informed that the Centre has given the regime permission just for limited trials of plasma therapy on serious patients at LNJP hospital. "In coming 2-3 days, we are going to conduct more trials and so will seek permission next week, for all serious patients," Kejriwal added.
Dr SK Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), who was also present at the press briefing, said blood and plasma are prepared for 2-3 other patients at LNJP hospital, and that they could also be given plasma therapy today.
He also urged those who have recovered from COVID-19 and are at their homes, to return forward and show their patriotism and donate plasma.
“The donor can donate plasma after an interval of 10-12 days, unlike blood donations, which might be done just the once in three months, Only the plasma is taken and not the blood. " Dr Sarin said.
He said that 25 persons need plasma donation nowadays. "It is inexpensive and affordable, unlike medications that are costly."
Last Tuesday, the Delhi government had got the approval from the Centre to do plasma therapy on critical patients.
In the fight against Coronavirus, Kejriwal said, his government is fighting on two levels - to manage the spread of the infection and also to treat those who have the infection.
In convalescent plasma therapy, antibodies of a recovered patient are taken and transfused into a sufferer (infected by the virus) to assist boost the latter's system.
The treatment showed positive results on a critical Coronavirus patient who was admitted at the Max Hospital in Saket.
Delhi has reported about 2,400 Coronavirus cases and 50 deaths up to now.
