Who is Shubhangi Swaroop and why do you need to know about her?

After seventy years of independence, Shubhangi Swaroop has rewritten history as she is the first Indian woman to be appointed as a pilot in the Indian Navy and will be soon flying the Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft.

She will be a part of the Naval Armament Inspectorate (NAI), where no other female has worked along with three other cadets of her batch.

Shubhangi originally hails from Bareilly Uttar Pradesh and along with three other women was a part of 328 midshipmen and cadets who graduated from India Naval Academy, Ezhimala in Kerela. She completed her biotechnology from VIT, Vellore and is also a national player of Taekwondo.  She has followed in the footsteps of the father who is also an officer in the Indian Navy. Her mother is also a primary teacher at Navy Children’s School.

Her father told the media “After competing her BTech in biotechnology, she was eager to join the defense forces. A national gold medallist in taekwondo and a passionate diver, she always dreamt of becoming part of the defense forces.”

Although excited she also understands the responsibility that the position holds. She in an interview she said “I know this is not just an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also.”

Shubhangi will now undergo a one-year vigorous training in Hyderabad at the Dundigal Air Force Academy along with other Army, Navy and Air Force pilots. Although she is the first Naval women pilot, there have been women officers who are in traffic controlling field and work as ‘observers’ for aircrafts aiding in communication and weaponry.

It is indeed a very proud moment for India and she will serve as an inspiration to many females all across the country where she proved everything can be achieved if one has the passion for it.
